Radio's Vital Role in Times of Emergency
NAB's Radio Heard Here initiative and the American Red Cross are embarking upon a campaign to educate listeners about the importance of radio during an emergency power outage. According to a recent survey by Ipsos conducted for Radio Heard Here, seven in 10 Americans own a battery-powered or crank radio, and while nearly half of those say that they would turn to radio for emergency information during times of disaster when no power is available, many are not aware that it could be the only way to get information during a disaster when the power goes out.

iBiquity and NPR Agree on Digital Radio Power Increase Proposal
On November 5, iBiquity Digital Corporation and National Public Radio (NPR) submitted a new joint proposal to the FCC to allow FM radio stations to increase the power of their digital signals. NAB filed a letter with the Commission supporting the compromise proposal and urging the FCC to act quickly to adopt it.

NAB Comments on FCC's Broadband Inquiry
Last week, NAB filed joint comments with the Association for Maximum Service Television in which NAB encouraged the FCC to embrace a consumer-focused approach to spectrum management. NAB urged the FCC to adopt a holistic approach to spectrum management that takes into account the public policy goals served by a particular use of spectrum (e.g., digital television), instead of over-emphasizing the revenues that a licensee may derive from a given use of spectrum allocation.

Update: Satellite Home Viewer Update and Reauthorization Act of 2009
On November 10, NBC affiliates from across the country came to Washington, D.C. to lobby members of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee on the pending satellite television reauthorization bill. On November 4, The NAB Education Foundation (NABEF) celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Broadcast Leadership Training (BLT) Program.. The BLT curriculum teaches senior level broadcast executives the fundamentals of purchasing, owning and successfully operating radio and television stations. To date, 37 percent of the alumni of the BLT Program have received one or more promotions and 28 former students have purchased stations.

Crystal Radio Awards Spotlight
KKLI-FM Colorado Springs, Colo. - The 2008 presidential election was a major focus for last year, and KKLI-FM's morning show conducted interviews with the people their listeners wanted to hear from, including local candidates for mayor and now First Lady Michelle Obama. And when a local organization that provides a safe house for area women and children had to cancel a fundraiser at the last minute, KKLI held an online auction, raising $7,000 from time-sensitive items that would have gone to waste.
