Update: Satellite Home Viewer Update and Reauthorization Act of 2009
On November 10, NBC affiliates from across the country came to Washington, D.C. to lobby members of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee on the pending satellite television reauthorization bill. The Senate Commerce Committee will be marking up its version of this bill on November 19 and the bill contains numerous issues of importance to broadcasters. NAB staff and representatives of the NBC affiliates board specifically focused on a few key areas including: the need for local-into-local television service via satellite in every market in the country, the need to protect the program exclusivity afforded to broadcasters on both the primary and multicast channels, the need to prevent changes to television markets that will undermine the viability of local broadcasting and other issues. The Senate Commerce Committee is the last of the four congressional committees of jurisdiction to consider its bill, which must be passed by the end of this calendar year. Once the committee approves its version of the bill, it will have to be merged with the Senate Judiciary Committee's version of the bill. Representatives from the House and Senate Commerce and Judiciary committees will then need to work out the differences between each chamber's bill and report back with one combined bill that will need approval from both the House and Senate.
