NAB’s Radio Heard Here initiative and the American Red Cross are embarking upon a campaign to educate listeners about the importance of radio during an emergency power outage. According to a recent survey by Ipsos conducted for Radio Heard Here, seven in 10 Americans own a battery-powered or crank radio, and while nearly half of those say that they would turn to radio for emergency information during times of disaster when no power is available, many are not aware that it could be the only way to get information during a disaster when the power goes out.
In an effort to spread the word, Radio Heard Here and the American Red Cross are partnering with Etón, manufacturers of American Red Cross emergency radios, to provide listeners in high risk areas such as New Orleans, Miami, Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco and elsewhere with the chance to receive a free Etón radio. Interested stations will receive up to a dozen free Etón radios to give away to listeners and will have the opportunity to interview a top disaster expert from the American Red Cross who can discuss the importance of radio and provide emergency preparedness information.
