NAB Files Opposition to Petition That Calls for Overturning Recent Media Ownership Decision
The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) filed opposition comments last week to a Petition for Reconsideration submitted by media critic group Common Cause, et al, that asks the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to overturn its December 2007 decision to slightly modify the ban on newspaper/broadcast cross-ownership. The Commission ruled that in the top 20 media markets, newspapers could combine with stations that are not among the four top stations in that market.

North Carolina Representative Voices Concern Over FCC Localism Mandates
U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-NC-07) sent a letter to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Kevin Martin on May 6, expressing concern over recent FCC proposals that would dictate how broadcasters serve their local communities, placing additional regulatory burdens on local radio and television stations. To date, 28 senators and roughly 130 members of the House have sent letters to the FCC expressing concern over the proposed regulation.

FCC Proposes FY 2008 Regulatory Fees
The FCC has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking announcing proposed regulatory fees for fiscal year 2008. Comments are due May 30, 2008 and reply comments are due June 6, 2008. Click here for the proposed new schedule of fees for media licensees. Congress has mandated that the FCC collect $312 million in regulatory fees for 2008, to recover the regulatory costs associated with the FCC’s enforcement, policy and rulemaking, user information, and international activities.
