FCC Proposes FY 2008 Regulatory Fees

The FCC has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking announcing proposed regulatory fees for fiscal year 2008. Comments are due May 30, 2008 and reply comments are due June 6, 2008. Click here for the proposed new schedule of fees for media licensees. Congress has mandated that the FCC collect $312 million in regulatory fees for 2008, to recover the regulatory costs associated with the FCC’s enforcement, policy and rulemaking, user information, and international activities. The only potential significant change is that the FCC proposes to initiate fees for licensees in the AM Expanded Band (1610-1700 kHz) that are currently exempt from payment (see paragraphs 6-7 in the Notice). The FCC does not intend to change any other of its established procedures or methods for regulatory fees, including its practice of mailing fee assessment postcards to broadcast licensees.
