In response to the Federal Communications Commission’s unanimous vote today on its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to advance the transition to NextGen TV, the following statement can be attributed to NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt:
“The FCC’s action today is a meaningful step toward realizing the full benefits of NextGen TV, and NAB applauds Chairman Carr and Commissioners Gomez and Trusty for their leadership on this important issue. By moving to eliminate outdated rules, the Commission is clearing the path for broadcasters to better serve viewers with enhanced picture and sound, robust emergency alerts and new interactive features.
NextGen TV is already on the air in more than 80 markets, and today’s vote signals important momentum. Broadcasters remain committed to delivering trusted local journalism, vital information and innovative new services for viewers across America, regardless of geographic or economic status. NAB looks forward to working with the Commission and industry partners to complete this transition.”
NextGen TV, built on the ATSC 3.0 standard, delivers major upgrades to picture and sound. But its greatest value is public service. It enables geo-targeted emergency alerts that reach viewers based on their location, even when cellular or internet service is unavailable.
These alerts provide life-saving information during wildfires, tornadoes and other disasters, coming directly from local broadcasters who are on the ground when it matters most. With its wake-up feature, NextGen TV can turn on a television during an emergency to deliver critical warnings, ensuring no one misses life-saving information, even in the middle of the night.
NextGen TV also allows stations to deliver more hyperlocal news and weather, keeping communities informed and connected. For millions who rely on free, over-the-air TV, this is a vital upgrade that preserves broadcasting as the most trusted source of information in times of crisis.
