NAB Teams with National Crime Prevention Council to Stop Identity Theft

--PSAs Featuring McGruff the Crime Dog to Raise Awareness to Theft--

Washington, DC - NAB and The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) have launched new public service announcements for television stations featuring McGruff the Crime Dog addressing the growing problem of identity theft. NAB member TV stations will be satellite-fed the PSAs today.

More than 10 million Americans were victims of identity theft in 2004, making it one of the nation's fastest growing crimes. Identity theft is a serious problem and costs individuals and businesses millions of dollars each year. NCPC, best known for its beloved icon McGruff the Crime Dog, has placed prevention at the forefront of the fight against identity theft. Through funding by the U.S. Department of Justice, NCPC has developed an identity theft prevention initiative to help consumers take practical steps to protect their personal information. McGruff will help NCPC carry the prevention message through three PSAs that depict scenarios in which thieves "steal" the identities of individuals and businesses.

NCPC is creating radio PSAs that are expected to air in the fall.

NCPC is a private, nonprofit organization whose primary mission is to enable people to create safer and more caring communities by addressing the causes of crime and violence and reducing the opportunities for crime to occur. NCPC manages public service advertising under the National Citizens' Crime Prevention Campaign-symbolized by McGruff the Crime Dog and his "Take A Bite Out Of Crime" slogan-and acts as secretariat for the Crime Prevention Coalition of America, a nonpartisan group of national, federal, state, and local organizations committed to preventing crime. NCPC is funded through a variety of government agencies, corporate and private foundations, and donations from private individuals. The National Association of Broadcasters is a full-service trade association that promotes and protects free, over-the-air local radio and television stations' interests in Washington and around the world. NAB is the broadcaster's voice before Congress, federal agencies and the courts. NAB also serves a growing number of associate and international broadcaster members.
