More Than 200 House Members Oppose Performance Tax
The Local Radio Freedom Act continues to gain support in the U.S. House of Representatives, with nearly half of all members now signed on as co sponsors. The resolution, introduced in late October by Reps. Gene Green (D-TX-29) and Mike Conaway (R-TX-11), denounces the notion of levying any fee on local radio broadcasters for music airplay. Support for the resolution now stands at 201 members, including the resolution's authors.

NAB Files Comments Opposing Re-Regulation
NAB filed extensive comments with the Federal Communications Commission last week in the latest round of the four-year-old localism proceeding. The Commission is proposing numerous rule changes that would effectively turn back the clock on regulation and re-impose a series of burdensome rules on broadcasters, many of which were abandoned in the early 1980s. NAB argued against reinstatement of license renewal processing guidelines that would mandate how much local programming licensees must air.

The FCC recently released a revised version of its handbook, "The Public and Broadcasting." This publication is required to be placed in every station's public file. Stations are also required to provide a copy of the handbook to any member of the public who requests one.

Celebration of Service to America Sponsorship Opportunities
The 10th annual National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation's Celebration of Service to America Awards will be held Monday, June 9, 2008, in Washington, D.C. In addition to recognizing the outstanding community service provided by local radio and television broadcasters across the nation, the Service to America Leadership Award will be presented to entertainment industry icon Quincy Jones for his humanitarian work in establishing the "Listen Up Foundation" and the "We Are the Future" project, both dedicated to helping underprivileged youth.
