Bipartisan House Opposition to RIAA Performance Tax Reaches 260
Reps. Suzanne Kosmas (FL) and Tim Murphy (PA) have become the latest House cosponsors of a bipartisan Congressional resolution opposing a performance tax on local radio stations. The Local Radio Freedom Act (H. Con. Res. 49) is now backed by 260 House lawmakers. An identical Senate resolution is supported by a bipartisan group of 27 U.S. Senators. The growing Congressional opposition comes as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) continues to lobby in support of legislation that would require local radio stations to pay an additional fee for every song aired free to listeners.

NAB Supports Limited Expansion of Licensed Wireless Microphones
NAB filed comments last week on an FCC proposal to open the TV frequency band to an influx of new unlicensed wireless audio devices, including wireless microphones. NAB explained that such an approach could cause harmful interference to DTV service, and is especially troublesome because it would be impossible to coordinate frequency use or resolve interference with untraceable unlicensed wireless microphone users.

NBC Sports to be Inducted into NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame
NBC Sports will be inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame during the NAB Show Television Luncheon. Accepting this honor on behalf of NBC Sports is Emmy Award winner Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Universal Sports and Olympics. The Luncheon, sponsored by VCI solutions, will be held on Monday, April 12, in Las Vegas.

Haiti's Signal FM Radio to be Honored at NABEF's Service to America Awards
NABEF's Celebration of Service to America Awards will honor Haiti's Signal FM radio for their outstanding service to the Haitian community during the aftermath of the recent earthquake disaster. Station owner Mario Viau will accept the award during the Celebration of Service to America gala held Monday, June 14, at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. NABEF Fellowships for NAB Executive Development Seminar - Application Deadline is April 30
The National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF) will award eight fellowships to people of color and women in broadcasting to attend the NAB Executive Development Seminar held July 26-29 at NAB headquarters in Washington, D.C. The seminar is designed to increase managerial effectiveness and provide the additional skills needed for career advancement.
