NAB Supports Limited Expansion of Licensed Wireless Microphones

NAB filed comments last week on an FCC proposal to open the TV frequency band to an influx of new unlicensed wireless audio devices, including wireless microphones. NAB explained that such an approach could cause harmful interference to DTV service, and is especially troublesome because it would be impossible to coordinate frequency use or resolve interference with untraceable unlicensed wireless microphone users. Instead, NAB and the majority of other parties offering comments on the proposal endorsed an alternative that would expand eligibility for a license under Part 74 of the FCC’s rules to use wireless microphones in the TV band to a few special entities that use microphones in controlled, professional settings, including theaters and houses of worship.
