Senate Commerce Subcommittee Reviews Satellite Home Viewer Legislation
On October 7, the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet held a hearing on the Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Reauthorization Act (SHVERA) reauthorizing legislation. Paul Karpowicz, chairman of the NAB Television Board and president of Meredith Corporation, testified on behalf of the television industry. In his testimony, Mr. Karpowicz highlighted the distinction between local community-oriented broadcasters and large cable and satellite companies and emphasized the vital role that broadcasters play in providing communities with critical local news, weather, emergency information and public affairs programming.

Reminder: New AM on FM Translator Rules Effective
October 1

As of October 1, 2009, AM broadcasters may take steps to use currently authorized FM translator stations to retransmit their AM signals within their AM stations' current coverage areas, pursuant to the rules and policies set forth in the FCC's Report and Order dated June 29, 2009. Also, as of that date, all outstanding special temporary authorizations allowing AM on FM translator services were cancelled, meaning that any AM stations currently using an FM translator needs to file a notification with the FCC, identifying their primary AM station.

NAB to Provide New PSAs on H1N1 via Satellite Feed on Friday
NAB will distribute a new series of public service announcements (PSAs) via satellite feed on Friday, October 16 to help stations keep their communities informed about the H1N1 flu virus. Celebrities including Marc Anthony, Amy Ryan and Jackie Joyner are featured in the campaign, which includes 13 PSAs, some of which are available in both English and Spanish.
