NAB Statement on DTV Hard Date Debate
The National Association of Broadcasters released a statement last Thursday regarding recent discussions on whether to alter the digital television transition hard date, originally set by Congress as February 17, 2009. Commenting on the matter, NAB Executive Vice President Dennis Wharton said: "The certainty created when Congress set the February 17 hard date for the DTV transition was a positive catalyst for broadcasters, manufacturers, retailers, public safety groups, consumers and the government. NAB and broadcasters nationwide are committed to being ready by February 17 and strongly support a solution that would enable the government to continue making converter box coupons available to consumers who rely on free television."

Analog Nightlight Program - Fast Track to Implementation
On December 24, 2008, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to implement the Short-term Analog Flash and Emergency Readiness Act of 2008. This Act required the FCC to develop and implement a voluntary program which will provide public safety and DTV related information where technically feasible, of continued analog television service for a period of 30 days after the February 17, 2009 DTV transition date.

NAB Applauds Introduction of Broadcaster Freedom Act
NAB applauds the introduction of the Broadcaster Freedom Act, legislation that would bar the reimposition of the Fairness Doctrine. A Senate version (S. 34) of the bill was introduced on January 7 by Sens. Jim DeMint (SC) and John Thune (SC). Legislation offered in the U.S. House of Representatives (H.R. 226) is sponsored by Reps. Mike Pence (IN-06) and Greg Walden (OR-02).
