AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act Continues to Gain Support

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Since its introduction in May, one-third of all senators and members of the House of Representatives have cosponsored legislation to ensure consumers have access to AM radio in automobiles. Despite increasing partisanship in Washington, D.C., lawmakers are uniting in support of the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act.

This legislation provides the Secretary of Transportation one year to establish a standard for all new motor vehicles in the U.S. to come with AM radio reception and playback, which should be clearly visible on the vehicle's dashboard. Between the legislation’s enactment and the new standard taking effect, cars lacking AM radio receivers must be explicitly labeled for buyers.

A bipartisan coalition of policymakers, including Sens. Ed Markey (D-MA), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), J.D. Vance (R-OH), Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Roger Wicker (R-MS), introduced the bill in the Senate. Recently joining the legislation as cosponsors are Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Jacky Rosen (D-NV).

Reps. James Comer (R-KY-1), Carlos Gimenez (R-FL-28) and Mike McCaul (R-TX-10) recently joined as cosponsors of the legislation in the House, which was introduced by Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ-5), Bruce Westerman (R-AR-4), Tom Kean, Jr. (R-NJ-7), Rob Menendez (D-NJ-8) and Maria Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA-3).

"The incredible bipartisan support the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act has garnered in just a short time is a testament to the integral role AM broadcasting plays in informing, entertaining and connecting Americans across the country," said NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt. "America's broadcasters thank the members of Congress that are standing with their local AM station listeners and working to preserve radio’s pivotal place in the car dashboard."
