NAB Urges Lawmakers to Probe Record Labels
The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) released a response addressing claims made by the musicFIRST Coalition, an organization backed by the Recording Industry Association of America, on June 5, 2008. Commenting on statements made by musicFIRST, NAB Executive Vice President of Media Relations, Dennis Wharton issued the following statement: "musicFIRST's latest missive fundamentally distorts today's radio market and misleads policymakers on the devastating consequences of a potential $7 billion tax benefiting RIAA and the foreign-owned record labels."

FCC Lifts Freeze on Maximization Applications and Petitions for Digital Channel Substitutions, Effective Immediately
Since 2004, a freeze has been in effect that prevents stations from seeking FCC approval to maximize facilities or change digital television (DTV) channels. Although the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) previously reported plans to lift the freeze in August, it announced in a May 30 public notice that it would lift the freeze early.

NAB Asks For Complete Coverage on Satellite
In comments filed June 4, NAB asked the FCC to ensure satellite carriers provided both standard definition and high definition signals of local broadcast stations. NAB's main concern is to protect consumer interests and be sure that subscribers to satellite have access to local broadcasts. Providing both standards will ensure that satellite customers have adequate access to all local programming.

As we enter into hurricane season NAB wants to make sure you have the necessary tools to help your station and community before, during and after a storm. Help local communities be ready before a storm hits with hurricane preparedness public service announcements (PSAs), live read copy and additional programming ideas from the American Red Cross, available online at NAB Spot Center. With the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) forecasting more intense hurricanes in 2008, it is important to prepare your audience now as effects from these storms could be felt as far as several hundred miles inland.
