đź‘‹ Good morning!
Thanks for checking out The Wrap, NAB’s weekly newsletter. Join NAB and strengthen the future of your business and free, local broadcasting.
1. Survey: Sports Fans Prefer Broadcast Over Streaming
📺 One big thing:Recently released data from the 2026 TVB Sports Survey confirms that fans want live sports to remain free and accessible on local television. More sports enthusiasts chose broadcast television as their way to view sports, including football, basketball, baseball, hockey, golf, soccer, auto racing or tennis.
NAB Blog: With games increasingly scattered across subscription platforms, fans are being asked to navigate a fragmented and costly viewing experience. As policymakers and leagues consider the future of sports distribution, this data shows that Americans want live sports to remain widely available on local broadcast television.
2. FCC, DOJ Approve Nexstar-Tegna Transaction
Yesterday, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Department of Justice (DOJ) cleared the Nexstar-Tegna transaction, waiving the national television ownership cap restriction in the process to allow the stations to combine.
NAB does not take a position on the merits of any individual transaction, but we view the action by the FCC and DOJ to approve this merger as a meaningful sign that the Commission understands the urgent need for ownership reform.
NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt: “We are grateful to Chairman Brendan Carr for his recognition that the national ownership cap is outdated and no longer reflects today’s media marketplace. This decision is an important acknowledgement that the media marketplace has changed and giving stations the ability to achieve greater scale is essential to sustaining trusted local journalism and emergency reporting. We look forward to continuing to work with the Commission as it modernizes its rules to ensure that broadcasters can continue to serve their local communities across the nation.”
