The NAB Radio Show and New AM Technical Rules

Late last year the FCC modified its technical rules to allow the use of computer modeling to verify the performance of AM directional antenna systems. While computer modeling methods can potentially save broadcasters many thousands of dollars in engineering costs, the application of these methods requires that broadcast engineers and consultants be adequately trained in their use.

The NAB Radio Show Engineering Program (September 23-25 in Philadelphia) will feature three hours of intensive instruction aimed at helping station engineers and consultants understand the practical application of computer modeling using the Method of Moments (MOM).

A properly designed and maintained antenna monitoring system is critical for the use of computer modeling for verification purposes. Additionally, many other conditions are set forth in the Rules that must be met in order to use the new methods. Final FCC rules regarding this matter are contained in the Commission’s Second Report & Order, September 26, 2008, available at the following link: http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-08-228A1.pdf.

As a way to help engineers understand what can and what cannot be done under the new rules, NAB has called on consultants Ron Rackley and Ben Dawson to develop this Radio Show instructional session. The session is based on the well attended two-day “AM Antenna Modeling Seminar” hosted by NAB last November in Washington.

The Radio Show session “Measurements & Mathematics for the New AM Proof Rules” is scheduled to begin at 8:00 am on September 24th. This rather daunting title does not mean that Ron and Ben will be teaching pure theory. The session is actually designed for practicing engineers and consultants who are seeking practical knowledge of how computer modeling software can be correctly and effectively utilized for “new rules” antenna proofs.

Here is the session schedule:

8:00 – 8:10 a.m. Welcome and Opening Remarks

8:10 – 8:45 a.m. DA Proofing Using Moment Method Modeling Overview – Rackley

8:45 – 9:20 a.m. FCC Requirements for DA Proofing Using MOM – Dawson

9:20 – 9:30 a.m. Break

9:30 – 10:10 a.m. Measurements Required for DA Proofs Using MOM – Rackley

10:10 – 10:50 a.m. Using MOM for DA Proofs – Dawson

10:50 – 11:45 a.m. Q & A

The Radio Show Engineering Program is considered continuing education by many organizations and attendance typically qualifies for credit in certification programs, such as those offered by the SBE.

Broadcast Equipment Auction Benefiting
Bayliss Foundation Scholarship and Internship Programs

The first-ever online Bayliss Foundation auction benefiting the Foundation’s scholarship and internship programs is underway until Wednesday, August 12, 2009. The auction includes donated new and previously owned radio and broadcast equipment including transmitters, studio, editing, remote and production equipment for radio, TV, video and other broadcast applications.

For complete details visit The Bayliss Online Auction on the Internet at http://rasmus.com/auction_detail.php?ID=401658. Note that there are no minimum bids or reserves for this auction.

The top priority at the Bayliss Foundation is to encourage aspiring young talent in radio and help develop them into tomorrow's industry leaders. Winning bids will provide critical funding for the Foundation’s scholarship and internship programs. For additional information on the Bayliss Foundation visit their Web site at www.baylissfoundation.org.
