Capitol Hill Event "Launches" Mobile DTV

Last Thursday (September 20, 2012), an event showcasing Mobile DTV was held in the Rayburn House Office Building on Washington D.C.'s Capitol Hill. It highlighted the growing availability of ATSC Mobile DTV service and receivers to government officials, press and the public.

One of the demo stations at the event showed the Dyle app running on a range of devices.

Featuring the tag line of "Never Miss a Minute," the event was jointly hosted by the Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC), the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC, developers of the A/153 standard enabling the Mobile DTV system) and NAB. Sponsoring partners were Mobile DTV platform organizations Dyle Mobile TV and the Mobile 500 Alliance, equipment manufacturers LG Electronics, Samsung, Elgato and Harris, and audience researcher Rentrak.

WUSA news anchor Derek McGinty, the event's moderator.

WUSA-TV news anchor Derek McGinty moderated the event, presenting a quick overview of how Mobile DTV works and an update on its current deployment status (130 stations in 50 markets) to the very full caucus room. He then introduced the other speakers on the program, who included Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL), Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), and Rep. John Dingell (D-MI), along with numerous industry representatives from the Mobile DTV marketplace.

(L to R) Reps. Cliff Stearns (R- FL), Anna Eshoo (D-CA), John Dingell (D-MI) and Ed Markey (D-MA) speaking at the event.

Multiple live presentations of Mobile DTV reception ran at various demo stations around the room throughout the event, on devices including two different iPad dongles (from Belkin and Elgato), the Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G smartphone (an Android-based device outfitted for Mobile DTV, currently available in 12 markets served by the MetroPCS mobile network), and several dedicated devices, including a prototype automotive back-seat display. Another presentation described the Mobile Emergency Alerting Service (M-EAS) service currently being standardized by ATSC as an additional feature of Mobile DTV. Following an initial pilot project with prototype equipment at public television stations in Massachusetts, Alabama and Nevada, WRAL in Raleigh NC became the first commercial television station to demonstrate M-EAS on September 13. At Thursday's Capitol hill event, WHUT-TV announced it would be the first television station in Washington DC to commit to launching M-EAS.

The event also highlighted the newly developed Mobile EAS feature of the service.

The speakers highlighted the advantages and promise of the new service, with the legislators repeatedly stressing its free availability and the fact that it allows users to view live TV on mobile devices without impact to their monthly data plans. The tone of the presentations was decidedly upbeat, with all the lawmakers congratulating broadcasters on the dawning of a new era in their service to U.S. audiences.

Further information about the Mobile DTV and its current status is available here.
