Crystal Radio Awards Spotlight

KUZZ-FM, Bakersfield, CaliforniaKUZZ-FM

Throughout 2010, KUZZ-FM in Bakersfield, California, helped their community raise more than $5.3 million and devoted 7,534 minutes of public service programming to community concerns and events.

As one of the 10 NAB Crystal Radio winners for 2011, KUZZ-FM chose safety as their primary initiative in 2010, providing weekly programming which focused on various safety issues, such as burn prevention, firearms safety, water safety and sober graduations. The station partnered with the local police department's "Christmas for Seniors" project, and conducted a drive-through donation facility to collect toiletries and household cleaning supplies for needy seniors. In support of under-insured breast cancer patients in their area, KUZZ presented a two-day auction and golf event, generating $115,000 for the Links for Life organization.

The 26 person KUZZ staff contributed 907 hours of volunteer time to 42 local groups and organizations. The station's support for the American Cancer Society raised over $2.3 million.

At the Great American Clean-Up, KUZZ staff and listeners joined 8,110 volunteers in a single day citywide event. The station helped raise $879,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the KUZZ Cares for Kids at Christmas campaign provided 1,500 gifts for 70 local families.

WHRI, Rock Hill, South Carolina

WHRICommunity is the heart of WRHI's mission statement. The station is a constant source of support for local organizations, providing not only air time, but rolling up their sleeves and helping in the planning and sponsorship of community events. For 25 years, the studios of WRHI in Rock Hill, South Carolina, have been transformed into Santa's workshop for the holidays, recruiting more than 100 volunteers to collect 28,000 toys for the local children in 2010.

One of the 10 NAB Crystal Radio Winners for 2011, WRHI's participation in community events have become annual traditions, such as "Toys for Happiness" (25 years), the "Easter Egg Classic" (29 years), "Boo-Ha-Ha- Halloween" (28 years), and "Prom Pledge" (21 years).

In addition to the events WHRI promotes and sponsors, the staff also lends their time and talent as board and committee members, as well as volunteering with dozens of organizations in York County. WHRI listeners know that when they need media support in York County, they can count on WHRI.
