Performance Tax Opposition Grows in House and Senate
Four additional House members and three more U.S. Senators have added their support to the Local Radio Freedom Act, a bipartisan resolution opposing the record label-led effort to levy a performance tax on local radio stations for music aired free to listeners. The Local Radio Freedom Act is now supported by a bipartisan group of 244 House members and 23 U.S. Senators. Reps. Bobby Rush (IL-01), John Adler (NJ-03), Dana Rohrabacher (CA-46), Steve Scalise (LA-01) and Sens. Susan Collins (ME), Thad Cochran (MS), and Johnny Isakson (GA) are the latest lawmakers to join a growing chorus of bipartisan congressional opposition to performance tax legislation supported by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

The NAB Radio Show and Jacobs Media Partner to Present the Jacobs Summit in Philadelphia
Partnering with Jacobs Media, the National Association of Broadcasters will present the Jacobs Media Summit at the NAB Radio Show in Philadelphia, September 23-25. The summit will be held Thursday, September 24 from 1 to 5 p.m., and will once again present a full schedule of educational sessions for radio broadcasters.

U.S. Senate Looks at Children's Television Act
The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation held a hearing on July 22 on "Rethinking the Children's Television Act for a Digital Media Age." ION Media Networks Executive Vice President and NAB Television Board member John Lawson testified on behalf of broadcasters. Also testifying at the hearing were Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski; Gary Knell, president of Sesame Workshop; Sandra Calvert, director of the Children's Digital Media Center at Georgetown University; Cyma Zarghami, president of Nickelodeon and MTVN Family Group; and James Steyer, CEO of Common Sense Media.

Television Broadcasters Reminded to File Cable Royalty Claims
Television stations whose signals were carried as distant signals by at least one cable system in 2008 must file a claim with the Copyright Royalty Board no later than July 31. If a station fails to file within this time frame, it cannot collect any royalties for 2008. Broadcasters can file claims online through the Copyright Office's Web site.

NAB Applauds MMTC-Clear Channel Partnership
The NAB Education Foundation applauds a new partnership forged between the Minority Media and Telecommunications Council (MMTC) and Clear Channel Radio aimed at promoting diversity in radio broadcasting. Announced at MMTC's annual conference in Washington last week, Clear Channel Radio is donating several AM radio stations, which will be used by MMTC in partnership with NABEF's Broadcast Leadership Training program, to give minorities and women in broadcasting enhanced station management opportunities.
