127 Lawmakers Oppose 'Fee, Tax or Royalty' on Local Radio Stations

The "Local Radio Freedom Act," H. Con. Res. 244, is now backed by 127 members of the House of Representatives. Introduced in late October by Reps. Gene Green (D-TX-29) and Mike Conaway (R-TX-11), the legislation states, "Congress should not impose any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charge relating to the public performance of sound recordings on a local radio station for broadcasting sound recordings over-the-air, or on any business for such public performance of sound recordings."

"The Local Radio Freedom Act" counters legislation introduced on December 18 by Reps. Howard Berman (D-CA-28) and Darell Issa (R-CA-49). Companion legislation was offered in the Senate by Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT). This bill would impose a new tax on local radio stations.
