KALC Denver Raises $1.4 Million

Entercom’s KALC-FM Denver raised $1.4 million for the Children’s Hospital of Colorado during the 19th annual “Alice Cares for Kids Radiothon,” held February 5 - 6.

WWMX-FM Baltimore Raises $1.4 Million for Kids

Entercom’s WWMX-FM Baltimore raised $1.4 Million in its 31st annual radiothon for Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, held February 20 - 21.

NBC News Launches Coronavirus Effort

NBC News launched on February 28 a new network-wide initiative to address the coronavirus as infections spread across six continents. The initiative includes a 24/7 live-blog with extensive video and the latest updates every few minutes. WARM-FM Promotes Safety as Coronavirus Spreads

Cumulus’ WARM-FM York, PA Program Director Ron Harrell and Afternoon Host AJ recently handed out hand sanitizers in the community to help minimize coronavirus fears.

KTTH-AM Hosts GOP Gubernatorial Forum

Bonneville’s KTTH-AM Seattle hosted and aired a two-hour GOP gubernatorial debate on February 28. All four Republican candidates participated: State Senator Phil Fortunato, former Bothell Mayor Joshua Freed, police chief Loren Culp and businessman Anton Sakharov. They discussed important issues, including gun rights, homelessness, the opioid epidemic and transportation.

KTTV Hosts Town Hall with Mayor Buttigieg

Fox-owned KTTV Los Angeles held a televised town hall on USC’s campus featuring Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg on February 20, the day after a Democratic presidential debate. Mayor Buttigieg answered questions on issues such as diversity and his midwestern roots. Watch the full town hall, check out KTTV’s behind-the-scenes conversation or listen to audio in podcast form.

Fox Station Expands 2020 Political Lineup

Fox-owned WAGA-TV Atlanta launched a new half-hour show, The Road to November, on February 14 that will air every Friday evening in primetime. WAGA covers the week’s key news on the presidential race, Georgia’s two U.S. Senate races, and several key U.S. House of Representative races in the Atlanta area. It also features commentary from political analysts and in-depth interviews with candidates.

Townsquare Launches Podcast on Addiction

Townsquare’s WKXW-FM Trenton, N.J., launched a new podcast on February 12 to address addiction. The first episode of the podcast featured guest Daniel Regan of the non-profit CFC Loud-N-Clear, who discussed his personal battles with addiction. A new podcast airs on the first Wednesday of every month.

BROADCASTERS SUPPORT THEIR COMMUNITIES

Jonesboro Stations Support Make-A-Wish

Saga Communications’ KJBX-FM, KDXY-FM, KEGI-FM and Gray Television’s ABC/NBC/CW affiliate KAIT-TV Jonesboro, Ark., raised more than $400,000 for Make-A-Wish in the 22nd annual “Have A Heart Wish-A-Thon” on February 21. Employees stood in freezing temperatures to collect donations at 18 locations.

Oregon Radio Raises $400,000 for St. Jude

Bicoastal Media’s KRWQ-FM and KIFS-FM Medford, Ore., raised $400,000 during the annual “Country Cares for St. Jude Kids Radiothon” on February 21. The stations have raised nearly $3 million in 17 years.

KWEN-FM and KJSR-FM Raise $195,000 for St. Jude

Cox Media Group’s KWEN-FM, KJSR-FM and Fox affiliate KOKI-TV Tulsa, Okla., raised more than $195,000 during the fifth annual “K95.5 St. Jude Radiothon” on February 6 – 7. The annual event has raised more than $750,000 in four years.

KQKQ-FM Collects 100 Miles of Toilet Paper

NRG Media’s KQKQ-FM Omaha collected over 2,000 rolls of toilet paper on February 7 for Open Door Mission, a resource center for people experiencing homelessness and poverty. On-air personalities Nikki Oswald and Laura Blenkush sat on closed toilets outside in snow and 20-degree temperatures with the goal of collecting 98.5 miles of toilet paper (approximately 1,700 rolls).

KFGE-FM Raises $93,000 for St. Jude

NRG Media’s KFGE-FM Lincoln, Neb., raised a record $93,000 during the 17th annual “St. Jude Country Cares for Kids Radiothon,” held February 5 – 6. Station staff and volunteers took donations and encouraged listeners to become monthly donors during the two-day broadcast event.

WPRT-FM Donates $100,000 to Local Teachers

Cromwell Radio Group’s WPRT-FM Nashville partnered with local nonprofit PENCIL to donate more than $100,000 in cash and school supplies, including digital learning devices, to teachers and students on January 23. Money and supplies were collected in December as part of WPRT’s “Season of Giving.”

Radiothon Helps Akron Hospital

iHeartMedia’s WKDD-FM Akron, Ohio, raised $386,000 for Akron Children’s Hospital in a radiothon held February 13 – 14. All funds support patient care. The radiothon has raised nearly $12 million in 21 years.

KCAU Battles ALS

Nexstar’s ABC affiliate KCAU-TV Sioux City, Iowa, raised $37,000 for families affected by ALS during the sixth annual “Pete Goede Memorial Concert” on February 9. The event featured four local bands. The concert, named for a local musician who died of ALS, has raised more than $100,000 since its inception.

Momentum Radio Supports Families After Tragedy

Momentum Broadcasting’s KJUG-FM, KIOO-FM, KCRZ-FM, and KVMI-FM Porterville, Calif., raised $22,000 on February 21 – 22 after the local library was hit by arson the previous week. Station staff sold T-shirts to raise money to support of the families of the two firefighters who died in the blaze.

WBAL-TV Supports Special Olympics Maryland

Hearst’s NBC affiliate WBAL-TV Baltimore sponsored the Polar Bear Plunge, which raised a record $3.27 million for the Special Olympics Maryland on January 23 – 25. The WBAL-TV, WBAL-FM and WBAL-AM Polar Bear Plunge teams raised $133,404 towards the total. The fundraiser supports programs for 8,000 Special Olympics athletes in Maryland who train and compete year-round for free.

The National Association of Broadcasters is proud to launch its 2020 Election Toolkit, a print and online resource to help local broadcast radio and television stations with their news coverage of the 2020 presidential, congressional and local elections.
