1. House Committee Includes AM Radio For Every Vehicle Act in Transportation Package
One big thing: This week, the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed surface transportation legislation that includes the AM Radio For Every Vehicle Act.
Why it matters: Listeners across the country rely on AM radio for trusted emergency alerts, news and information during natural disasters and other crises, especially when other communications systems fail. It's urgent that AM radio remain available in vehicles.
This is an important step in creating an additional pathway for The AM Radio For Every Vehicle Act to get to the finish line by folding it into broader legislation that aims to provide infrastructure funding and improve transportation safety.
NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt: "As lawmakers consider policies affecting America’s transportation infrastructure, ensuring continued access to AM radio in vehicles remains essential for public safety. Leaders on both sides of the aisle recognize AM radio’s unique and indispensable role in keeping Americans informed, especially in times of emergency. We appreciate the support of the Act’s nearly 380 House and Senate cosponsors and urge Congress to take swift action to advance this legislation into law.”
2. NO FAKES Act Introduced in Congress
Sens. Marsha Blackburn (TN), Chris Coons (DE), Thom Tillis (NC), and Amy Klobuchar (MN), along with Reps. Maria Salazar (FL-27) and Madeleine Dean (PA-4), introduced a revised version of their bipartisan Nurture Originals, Foster Art and Keep Entertainment Safe (NO FAKES) Act to protect the voice and visual likenesses of individuals and creators from the proliferation of digital replicas created without their consent.
NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt: “Broadcasters play a vital role in keeping communities informed, and the spread of deceptive deepfakes undermines both individual rights and public trust. This bipartisan bill offers meaningful safeguards while respecting First Amendment protections, and we look forward to working with Congress to advance it.”
