1. FCC Examines Sports Marketplace -- NAB Makes Broadcasters’ Case
One big thing: The FCC is examining how fragmentation in the sports marketplace — including the shift of live games to streaming paywalls and exclusive platform deals — is affecting consumers and the long-standing role of free, over-the-air television.
NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt: “As the Commission evaluates these marketplace trends, it is important to ensure that local stations have a fair opportunity to compete for premium sports rights. That includes modernizing outdated ownership restrictions that limit broadcasters’ ability to achieve the scale necessary to compete in today’s media marketplace.”
Why this matters: For decades, live sports have been a cornerstone of free television and a major driver of local station economics. As distribution models change and rights fees soar into the billions, this proceeding could have significant implications for sports fans, media competition and the future of local broadcasting.
2. ICYMI: Air New Spots to Thank Your Legislators for Supporting Local Radio
NAB has released new radio spots to thank the members of Congress who have supported the AM Radio For Every Vehicle Act. Please air these “thank you” spots to publicly recognize members of Congress who are standing with local radio and the listeners who depend on AM in emergencies.
Please air these spots as often as possible. Each airing reinforces the urgency for congressional leadership to bring the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act to a vote and encourages additional lawmakers to support it.
