1. New Survey: Broad Public Support for Eliminating National Cap
A new survey of registered voters conducted by Fabrizio Ward finds broad public support for eliminating the national broadcast ownership cap.
Among other findings, the survey shows that voters see the national ownership cap as unfair by a 38-point margin: 58% of voters say the 39% ownership restriction is unfair, including 33% who say it is very unfair.
NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt: “Voters are sending a clear message: the government should not impose arbitrary limits on trusted local broadcasters while Big Tech platforms face no such restrictions.”
Further reading: This week on the NAB Blog, we discuss Trinity Broadcasting’s ex parte filing with the FCC arguing that this arbitrary limit no longer serves the public interest, stifling the voices of religious broadcasters.
Looking ahead: On February 10, the Senate Commerce Committee plans to hold a hearing on the 39% broadcast television ownership cap. NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt will testify, making a public case for why the outdated ownership rules are an impediment to broadcasters' ability to produce the high quality, trusted local news content that Americans rely on.
2. FCC Highlights Best Practices to Defend Against Ransomware
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau is encouraging broadcasters to strengthen their cybersecurity defenses with new guidance focused on preventing and responding to ransomware attacks.
The recommendations outline practical steps stations can take to protect systems, safeguard operations and maintain business continuity amid rising cyber threats.
