1. Report: Local Broadcast TV News Production Increased 35% Over Last Decade

A new NAB analysis of Nielsen data shows that America's broadcasters are delivering more local news than ever before.

  • 📺 Since 2011, the number of local news telecasts has increased by 35%.
  • There have also been big increases in the number of hours of local news aired and number of Spanish-language newscasts.

2. Senate Judiciary Committee Schedules JCPA Markup

The Senate Judiciary Committee has announced a markup of the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA). While the bill was scheduled for markup on Thursday, due to committee rules the bill is expected to be held over until after the August recess.

  • ⚖️ The JCPA levels the playing field between local media outlets and the Big Tech gatekeepers that today leverage their market power to devalue our trusted news and community-focused content.
  • We will continue to work with policymakers to advance this critical legislation.

3. Sens. Heinrich and Barrasso Urge Colleagues to Support Local Radio Freedom Act

Sens. Martin Heinrich (NM) and John Barrasso (WY) published a Dear Colleague letter urging the rest of the Senate to cosponsor the Local Radio Freedom Act and signal their opposition to any potential legislation that imposes new performance royalties on broadcast radio stations for music airplay.

  • 📜 Currently, 27 senators are cosponsoring this resolution.
  • Contact your legislators today to ask them to add their support, or thank them for being a cosponsor.

4. ATSC 3.0 Successfully Used to Deliver Emergency Communications

🚨 On July 4, a pilot project successfully allowed multiple public safety agencies to share emergency communications through improved video, alert and file sharing.

  • "This live datacasting pilot spotlights the unique and valuable opportunities made possible by the ATSC 3.0 standard, especially when it comes to public safety," said Sam Matheny, executive vice president, Technology and chief technology officer, NAB.
