The Wrap

June 17, 2022

The Wrap today is 904 words and a 5 minute read.

👋 Good Friday morning! Here is your wrap up of what you need to know from our HQ in the nation's capital this week.

We welcome your feedback at nab@nab.org.

1. Broadcasters Making a Difference for Ukraine's Children of War

Help Ukraine

NAB is partnering with UNICEF USA on a public service announcement campaign benefiting humanitarian work in Ukraine.

  • You can run these spots from June 20, World Refugee Day, through or beyond July 4.
  • 🌍 PSAs are available in English and Spanish for broadcast television and radio. Download them here.

2. Happening on the Hill

The US Capitol

We understand that plans are underway to introduce a companion bill to the so-called American Music Fairness Act (AMFA) in the Senate.

  • 💸 Why it matters: This bill would take much-needed money away from local radio stations and funnel it to foreign-owned record labels.
  • Download radio spots and scripts opposing a performance tax here.
  • Keep your eyes peeled: No date is set yet for when this bill would be introduced. Watch for updates from us when it happens.

The House Financial Services appropriations bill now includes language that would prevent the FCC from targeting broadcasters that run ads for marijuana products in states where cannabis is legal.

  • 👀 But take note: The bill faces significant procedural hurdles before becoming law. We're watching for opportunities to address the inequitable treatment of broadcast advertising.

3. Don't Miss Out on Your Repack Reimbursement

September 6 is the deadline for stations seeking reimbursements related to the spectrum repack.

  • 💸 Earlier is better: The FCC says submit your request ASAP.

4. Speak Up Now

Hands holding a portfolio

August is approaching fast: now is the time to contact your members of Congress to schedule a visit to your station while they are home in their state and district offices.

  • 📣 Get the tools you need to best showcase your station's work here.
  • Brush up on all the issues NAB and broadcasters are advocating for on the Hill here.
  • Find out when your legislators will be home over the summer.

5. Shine a Light on Your Best Journalism

Red carpet

The duPont-Columbia Awards are looking for work that features deep original reporting in the public interest.

  • 🏆 Deadline is July 1: enter to win a Silver Baton here.

6. Oh What a Night!
