FCC Reminds Broadcasters to Ensure Accessible EAS Alerts

On January 7, 2021, the FCC issued an Enforcement Advisory to remind Emergency Alert System (EAS) participants, including television and radio broadcasters, of their obligation to comply with the EAS rules, particularly their obligation to ensure that EAS alerts are accessible to persons with disabilities. The advisory sets forth steps for how broadcasters can improve their participation in EAS, such as checking their equipment and participating in required EAS tests. The advisory also lists the requirements for making sure that EAS alerts are accessible to persons with visual or hearing disabilities. Finally, the FCC encourages consumers to report inaccessible EAS alerts to the FCC and reminds EAS participants of the enforcement consequences for violating the rules. NAB strongly encourages broadcasters to review this reminder and take any steps needed to ensure that EAS alerts are accessible.
