Next Generation TV

Moving Toward Implementing the Next Generation of TV Service

In collaboration with the television industry, NAB prepared for the deployment of Next Generation TV and product announcements expected in 2020. Next Gen TV is the platform that will keep television broadcasters relevant in the media ecosystem for years to come with the ability to provide ultra-high definition TV, interactive features and personalized and customized content.

NAB continued its partnership with the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) and Tribune (now Nexstar) station WJW to operate an experimental Next Gen TV test station in Cleveland, Ohio, performing important laboratory and field test programs on capabilities and features of the new broadcast system.

NAB organized four multi-day Next Gen TV “interoperability events” in Santa Barbara, Cleveland and Phoenix. These events brought together broadcasters, professional equipment and consumer electronics manufacturers to exercise basic and advanced capabilities of the Next Gen TV system using real world equipment configurations and pre-production consumer receiving devices.

NAB, CTA and the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) together led the industry in organizing and funding a conformance test plan and logo certification program for Next Gen TV consumer devices. The Next Gen logo developed by CTA will be used to identify consumer TV sets that are compliant with the ATSC 3.0 standard that underpins the Next Gen TV system.
