The Broadcast Engineering Conference at the 2013 NAB Show will include a special session presented by NAB Labs entitled "RF Boot Camp: Understanding Radio & Television Transmission." It will be held all day on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 (9 a.m. - 5 p.m), in Room S219 of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The program was developed as a part of NAB Labs' educational efforts, to offer basic knowledge regarding the operations of a broadcast radio or television RF plant. The agenda will cover the distribution of program and data content from the studio to the RF transmission points. Instructors will address the types of hardware and software typically used at the RF plant, and explain remote monitoring and telemetry scenarios.

Towers, transmission lines and antennas will be the focus of an interactive discussion tailored to attendees who are unfamiliar with maintenance requirements and safety concerns. Specific FCC and OSHA rules related to RF transmission will be explained, along with methods commonly used to ensure compliance with those rules.

The RF Boot Camp will be especially valuable for IT professionals who require knowledge of broadcast RF technologies, students interested in broadcast engineering as a career, studio/audio/video engineers interested in expanding their broadcast operations knowledge, technical operations staff who need to understand RF transmission methodologies, and small-market station owners and operators needing background on RF operations.

Instructors will include John Bisset, Western Regional Sales, The Telos Alliance; Mary Ann Seidler, Vice President, Sales, Tieline; Paul Shulins, Director of Technical Operations, Greater Media Boston; Garrison Cavell, Senior Engineer, Cavell, Mertz & Associates; and Cindy Cavell, President, Cavell, Mertz & Associates.

The program will specifically address the following areas:

  • TV and Radio Studios
  • TV and Radio STLs (including IP transport)
  • Processing of RF Signals Prior to Transmission
  • Monitoring and Troubleshooting
  • AM, FM and TV Exciters
  • AM, FM and TV Transmitters
  • RF Filtering and Combining
  • Towers and Antennas (AM, FM and TV Broadcast, plus STL/RPU)

Like all Broadcast Engineering Conference sessions, the NAB Labs RF Boot Camp is open to all Conference Flex Pass and SMARTPass registrants. For more information on the RF Boot Camp or other BEC sessions, or to register for the Show, click here.
