AM Band Revitalization is the Focus of Session at 2013 NAB Show

Donate a Door Prize for the HAM Reception at the 2013 NAB Show

One of the "go-to" events at the 2013 NAB Show is the Amateur Radio Operator's Reception (called the "HAM" reception) which is open to all NAB Show attendees. This year's event is being held on Wednesday, April 10 from 6-8 p.m. in Ballroom B of the Las Vegas Hotel and Casino (formerly the Las Vegas Hilton). Sponsored by Broadcast Supply Worldwide, Heil Sound, Ltd., and Turner Engineering, this event also relies upon the generosity of dozens of companies and individuals who donate door prizes which are then raffled off during the event (you must be present to win).

If you would like to contribute to the evening's festivities by donating a door prize, please contact Katy Armstrong at NAB (karmstrong@nab.org). All prize donors will be recognized in a scrolling video display at the event and in the NAB Radio and TV TechCheck newsletters published just preceding the event. Prizes can be of any size and value but should be selected to appeal to technically inclined individuals who have a passion for their craft. Last year, prizes valued at over $14,000 were donated and raffled off before an enthusiastic crowd of over 700 NAB Show attendees!

One of the highlights of this year’s NAB Show (April 6-11 in Las Vegas, Nev.) promises to be the AM Band Revitalization Panel, a “crossover” session that is part of both the Broadcast Engineering Conference and Broadcast Management Conference at the Show.

A subject of growing interest throughout the industry, the session will include the unique element of a sitting FCC Commissioner as its moderator.

Commissioner Ajit V. Pai will moderate the panel of AM radio leaders, which includes both engineering and policy experts. They will explore the options for revitalizing the AM band while maintaining emphasis on local programming.

It is well known that AM radio is at a crossroads, as broadcasters explore routes for revitalizing AM service while continuing to provide the popular, local programming that listeners have treasured for decades. A number of technical and regulatory options are under consideration today, including FM translators, all-digital IBOC, and other solutions.

Joining Commissioner Pai onstage to discuss these options are a number of experts with deep experience in the AM band, including Ben Downs, Vice President and General Manager of Bryan Broadcasting, Diane Warren, Founder and President of BouceOLOGY, Inc., Glynn Walden, Senior Vice President of Engineering at CBS Radio, John Garziglia, Member of Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, LLP, and Melodie Virtue, Owner at Garvey Schubert Barer.

The panel will take place on Monday, April 8, 2013, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m., in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center (Rooms N231/233).

It will be immediately followed by a report on recently conducted Field Testing of All-Digital AM IBOC by David Layer, Senior Director of Advanced Engineering at NAB. The session will conclude with presentation of a paper by Hal Kneller of Nautel entitled New Life for AM with Digital Transmission (A Look at the Options).

All of the above sessions are open to NAB Show attendees with a Conference Flex Pass or SMARTPass.
