NAB CRYSTAL RADIO AWARD PRESENTED TO WHUR-FM

LAS VEGAS, NV - WHUR-FM Washington, DC today was awarded the National Association of Broadcasters Crystal Radio Award. Since 1987, the NAB Crystal Radio Awards have recognized radio stations for their outstanding year-round commitment to community service.

NAB selected 10 winners from a pool of 50 finalists. Recipients were recognized at today's Radio Luncheon in Las Vegas.

WHUR-FM provided this description of its accomplishments in 2005:

"Faced with existing social challenges and new ones, WHUR set out in '05 to continue its 35-year commitment to serve the Washington community. Providing more than $2.3 million in public service and community affairs announcements, WHUR answered the call for help with 15 fund-raising events, collecting a total of $1.6 million for efforts like feeding 5,000 families for Thanksgiving, providing 500 new coats and 15,000 new toys for children for Christmas and committing 4,958 minutes in airtime. Staff members donated $500,943 in volunteer service hours. When it comes to education, WHUR is committed, hosting a two-hour town-hall education meeting and a 5K Education Run/Walk, raising $250,000 to place a library inside every classroom in Prince George's County. WHUR fought back against crime and violence with a two-hour Crime Summit, four family fun benefit basketball games to purchase school supplies and a 12-hour radiothon to help battered women and their children, raising $140,000 to build a new shelter. When Hurricane Katrina struck, WHUR sprang into action with a three-day radiothon for the Howard 400, college students displaced by the storm. Four hundred students received new coats, hats, gloves, bed linen, toiletries and $1,000 each. WHUR… here today, tomorrow and forever serving the community."

The Radio Luncheon, sponsored by ASCAP, featured a keynote address by Walt Mossberg, technology columnist for The Wall Street Journal. During the luncheon, Dick Purtan, legendary host of Oldies 104.3 WOMC Detroit's "Morning Show with Purtan's People," was inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
