NAB CRYSTAL RADIO AWARD PRESENTED TO WHAI-FM LAS VEGAS, NV - WHAI-FM Greenfield, MA today was awarded the National Association of Broadcasters Crystal Radio Award. Since 1987, the NAB Crystal Radio Awards have recognized radio stations for their outstanding year-round commitment to community service. NAB selected 10 winners from a pool of 50 finalists. Recipients were recognized at today's Radio Luncheon in Las Vegas. WHAI-FM provided this description of its accomplishments in 2005: "While a uniquely challenging year, '05 presented WHAI with more opportunities to help the community, the nation and the world than ever before. Along with regular programming, newscasts, event listings, PSAs and local event promotion, WHAI supported tsunami relief efforts with a fund-raising event that netted the Red Cross $10,172 in just six hours. When Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, WHAI raised another $40,000 for the Red Cross and spearheaded the adoption of Foxworth, MS, sending a tractor-trailer full of supplies to that devastated community. When disaster struck at home with flooding in Greenfield in October, WHAI again led the way with material relief and on-air support. Throughout the year, the station also participated in and coordinated traditional fund-raising events. The food drive for the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts garnered 3,182 pounds of food. The "Cans" Film Festival, benefiting veterans and their families, took in one ton of food in just two hours. The Toys for Tots campaign brought in 15,000 items for needy children at Christmas. With a dedicated, hardworking staff committed to a hands-on approach, WHAI's '05 efforts were felt in the local community, across the country and around the globe." For more information on WHAI's accomplishments, contact Daniel Guin, general manager, at 413-774-4301.
