Chicago's WGN-AM Saves Local Animals From the Summer Heat
Tribune Broadcasting Company's WGN-AM Chicago recently hosted a fundraiser for the local Animal Welfare League to benefit area animals. In June, John Williams, the mid-day host for WGN-AM Radio learned that thieves had stolen and destroyed three air conditioning units at the shelter, leaving more than 100 animals to suffer in the Chicago heat. On July 7, Williams launched a one-day fundraising campaign asking his listeners to donate funds to replace the stolen units. In just two and a half hours, WGN-AM listeners pledged $23,580. Additionally, several local companies provided large donations, including Mack Companies, an area business that volunteered to install the air conditioning units for free. "People WANT to help – they just sometimes need someone to lead," said Williams. "We said, 'Let's DO this,' and our listeners jumped on board. It was amazing to experience." Bonneville's KIRO-AM Seattle Lands Supplies for Japanese Orphans
Bonneville-owned KIRO-AM Seattle's Ron and Don Show last month launched Operation: Airlift Japan, an initiative to support a struggling orphanage in Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that impacted the country earlier this year. Ron and Don listeners responded to the challenge with great enthusiasm. Donations totaled an estimated $1.2 million worth of basic supplies for the orphanage. Just weeks ago, KIRO-AM announced that the nearly 96,000 pounds of relief supplies was delivered to the Naval Air Facility in Misawa, Japan and was in route to the 436 orphaned children. "You can't help everyone everywhere, but you can help someone somewhere," explained KIRO-AM's Ron Upshaw. "When we heard the story of these orphans, we knew that this group of children was our 'someone,' and Japan was our 'somewhere.' The Ron and Don Nation agreed, and we were overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support from the people of the Pacific Northwest and their desire to help."
