KSWD-FM Los Angeles, Calif. was one of 10 NAB Crystal Radio Award winners for 2010. Here is the summary of their 2009 community service efforts that the station submitted as part of their entry:

The Sound's mission is to be "All About the Music," specifically to offer music in the service of our community. When two firefighters were killed battling wildfires, The Sound supported their families through "Pay for Play" song requests. During 2009, The Sound launched its own charitable arm called Project M.U.S.I.C. (Music for Underfunded Schools in California). On-air appeals and station events raised money for music education via the GRAMMY Museum Education Program and Arts Advantage Program of Orange County Department of Education. To assist the Los Angeles parks department, The Sound coordinated bands to perform free weekly concerts at Pershing Square. The Sound has helped organizations like The American Heart Association, Toys for Tots, Habitat for Humanity and numerous others to raise awareness to their causes. The Sound gives all employees in all departments 40 paid hours for volunteerism per year and matches up to $600 in personal donations. The staff spent a weekday cleaning litter from an area beach – without publicity – because it was the right thing to do. In just two years of existence, 100.3 The Sound has established that community service is our business. We are proud to be making a difference in Southern California.

Now is the time to begin collecting materials for your 2011 Crystal Radio Award entry. NAB is accepting entries from all radio stations beginning January 3, 2011. Entry information can be found here.
