FCC to TV Stations: Closed Captioning Contact Info is Overdue
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) last week issued a Public Notice to remind all video program distributors, including broadcast television stations, that the new closed captioning contact information requirements are now in effect. Per new rule 47 C.F.R. § 79.1(i), all video program distributors are required to submit to the Commission contact information where immediate and written closed captioning complaints can be sent. This rule applies even to those TV stations that are currently exempt from the obligation to provide closed captioning. The unusual reminder from the FCC – issued more than one month after the effective date of the new requirements – suggests that many TV stations have yet to submit the contact information. If you believe your station has not yet submitted the closed captioning contact information, instructions on how to do so can be found in the FCC’s public notice, which you can access here.
