2010 NAB Show Takes Attendees Deep into the Cosmos With a Telescopic Look at "Hubble 3D"

The NAB Show has announced the participants in a Content Theater session titled "Hubble 3D: Filmmaking in Outer Space with IMAX Technology." The panelists will be Toni Myers, director and producer of "Hubble 3D"; David Keighley, executive vice president, IMAX; Brian Bonnick, executive vice president of technology, IMAX; and Larry O'Reilly, executive vice president of theatre development, IMAX. Perry Hoberman, an associate professor at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, will moderate. The panel will take place on Tuesday, April 13 at 3 p.m.

Through the power of IMAX 3D, "Hubble 3D" will enable moviegoers to journey through distant galaxies to explore the grandeur and mysteries of our celestial surroundings, and accompany space-walking astronauts as they attempt some of the most difficult and important tasks in NASA's history. Narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, "Hubble 3D," will offer an inspiring and unique look into the Hubble Space Telescope's legacy and highlight its profound impact on the way we view the universe and ourselves.

The NAB Show session will explore how IMAX collaborated with NASA to capture Hubble 3D's extraordinary, intergalactic imagery. It will examine the process of training the space shuttle Atlantis astronauts to be filmmakers, the challenges of realizing the script in zero gravity and in daytimes that lasted 45 minutes – and the techniques used to create in stereoscopic 3D. The panel will also illustrate how innovation and technology have been at the forefront of IMAX's mission to deliver the best movie experiences to millions of people worldwide.

"These brave STS-125 astronauts and filmmakers have used new digital technologies, including stereoscopic 3D, to explore our celestial surroundings – and movie audiences are the beneficiary of this incredible filmmaking journey," said Chris Brown, executive vice president, Conventions and Business Operations for NAB Show. "IMAX is a true pioneer in the media ecosystem and we are delighted to present some of it’s best and brightest for this session."

Toni Myers is the director and producer of "Hubble 3D." She directed, produced and wrote the recent IMAX film, "Space Station 3D," which has grossed more than $100 million since its release, and won the Large Format Film Industry's Best Film award. She also wrote and edited the multiple award-winning films "The Dream Is Alive," "Destiny in Space" and "Blue Planet," which she also narrated.

David Keighley is executive vice president of IMAX, where he is responsible for motion picture and digital post-production and image quality assurance. He joined IMAX Corporation in 1988 and has been involved with the post production of more than 250 large format films since 1972 including all of IMAX Corporation's space films.

Brian Bonnick is executive vice president of technology for IMAX, and served as the executive producer for "Hubble 3D." Bonnick has headed the development of several technologies that have been instrumental in propelling IMAX into the worldwide commercial exhibition market and establishing the IMAX theatre network as an important distribution platform for Hollywood blockbusters. Bonnick was also part of the filmmaking team for the first-ever IMAX 3D space film, "Space Station 3D."

Larry O'Reilly serves as executive vice president of theatre development for IMAX. In that role he oversees all aspects of theatre sales for IMAX as well as the development, design and installation of IMAX theatres.

Content Theater Sessions are dedicated to showcasing cutting-edge content and first-looks, and have been a popular feature of the NAB Show for the past two years. The sessions are designed to demonstrate how the tools and technology on the NAB Show floor are used to create today's most dynamic content. This year's line-up also includes "'Alice in Wonderland:' Turning Fantasy into Motion Picture Reality," which will explore both the production and post production processes, and will describe the challenges of creating characters of unique heights and proportions in a synthetic environment. Additional Content Theater sessions will be announced in the coming weeks.
