NAB Urges FCC to Protect DTV from Unlicensed Wireless Mics
NAB and the Association for Maximum Service Television (MSTV) filed joint comments objecting to the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) proposal to open the TV band to a new universe of wireless audio devices, including wireless microphones, on an unlicensed basis, under Part 15 of the FCC's rules. Such an approach will subject television service to potentially harmful interference, according to the filing. In particular, NAB and MSTV disputed the FCC's proposal to adopt this mechanism on an interim basis while it resolves the ongoing inquiry arguing that it will be impossible to later reverse course as these types of wireless audio devices are untraceable. Instead, NAB and MSTV support a more conservative, narrow expansion of Part 74 eligibility to allow certain additional entities to operate wireless audio devices in the TV band on a licensed, frequency coordinated basis, including theaters, live music productions, government bodies and houses of worship.
