FCC Orders Wireless Mics Off 700 MHz Band

Last week the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a decision that bans wireless microphones from being used in the 700 MHz frequency band as of June 12, 2010. Wireless microphones have operated in the band without FCC licensees in this television spectrum for many years. This action has been anticipated since the FCC auctioned off the 700 MHz spectrum for public safety, mobile broadband and other services in early 2008. Although most wireless microphones will continue to work as they operate in a different frequency band, the FCC has unveiled a consumer outreach plan to help consumers figure out whether their wireless device is currently operating in the prohibited band, and if so, whether the device can be retuned to another band. That Web site also includes a list of more than 300 models of wireless microphones and associated elements that will be barred from the band. Click here for a copy of the FCC’s Order.
