It might’ve been 1985 when LL Cool J told the world “I Can’t Live Without My Radio,” but nearly 25 years later we still can’t get enough of it. Just take a look at the past month: radio is everywhere – in print, on TV and on the big screen.
Richard Curtis’ fact-based movie "Pirate Radio", released this month and starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, tells the story of a group of deejays that set up offshore radio stations in 1960s England at the time when British radio was under the control of the BBC. The movie reminds us of radio’s important role in bringing the likes of Hendrix, the Beatles, the Kinks, the Rolling Stones, the Who and other rock ‘n roll legends to millions of listeners around the world.
New to Comedy Central is a show called "Free Radio" that chronicles the story of a station intern who steps in to host a popular radio show when the real host defects to satellite radio. The show originally aired on VH1 in 2008 and is making a comeback on Comedy Central, which began airing episodes this past month.
And, not to be outdone, radio made an appearance in one of the fanciest gift guides of all – Vanity Fair's 2009 Holiday Gift Guide. The magazine featured Areaware's Magno AM/FM radio, which is hand-crafted in an Indonesian farming village and made from new growth wood. For every tree that is used in the production of the radios, a new one is planted.
