WIBC-FM Indianapolis, Ind., was one of 10 NAB Crystal Radio Award winners for 2009. Here is the summary of their 2008 community service efforts that the station submitted as part of their entry:
Touching lives. That’s what WIBC is about. And this year, WIBC celebrates “70 Years Strong” as one of America’s premiere stations, proudly serving Indianapolis. Winner of Legendary Station and News/Talk Station of the Year Marconi Awards, WIBC believes that service to the local community is a requirement. Now more than ever. WIBC keeps Indianapolis in touch with issues that impact lives. WIBC provides listeners a daily platform on topics that matter, from fighting crime in neighborhoods, to assuring a good education for kids, to being able to afford a tank of gas. WIBC’s year-round focus on helping local organizations is virtually unsurpassed. Among the efforts in 2008, WIBC helped raise almost $1million for local charities, including the Salvation Army and Riley Children’s Hospital. The station collected close to 5,000 teddy bears for Indianapolis Police and provided round-the-clock news and public service information during record storms and flooding. In total, WIBC dedicated approximately $800,000 in airtime supporting local organizations and causes. WIBC staff members are also community leaders in their personal lives. When news happens, or when there is a community crisis or a celebration, Indiana just naturally turns to WIBC Radio. It’s a reputation we’re incredibly proud of.
