DTV Coupon Program Updates Offer Consumer Relief

Consumers whose converter box coupons have expired can now reapply for replacement coupons, one of the major changes recently made to the federal government’s TV Converter Box Coupon Program.

The program, which helps over-the-air viewers save money in upgrading their sets to digital television (DTV), will replace up to two unredeemed coupons per eligible household. Consumers can request replacement coupons online at www.dtv2009.gov/ApplyCoupon.aspx or by phone at 1-888-DTV-2009.

The waiting list for coupons, which had swelled to more than four million requests, has also been cleared. Coupons are now being sent via first-class mail and should arrive at homes more quickly.

More help is on the way for viewers still having trouble making the transition to DTV. AmeriCorps, in partnership with the Federal Communications Commission, is training its members to help consumers apply for coupons, install converter boxes and antennas and staff DTV walk-in centers. Before branching out nationally, the joint effort will be tested first in Denver where several stations are going all-digital on April 16.
