"Going for the Gold" Campaign: Demonstrating Radio's Contribution the Recording Industry

Jacobs Media is spearheading a campaign that demonstrates radio's long-time contribution to the record industry and its artists. The goal of the campaign is to send a message to Congress reminding them of radio’s importance to the recording industry and artists.

Jacobs Media is asking all music stations to take digital photos of every gold and platinum single and album that labels have awarded them over the years, and email them to gold@jacobsmedia.com. This photographic collection of appreciation from the record industry, underscoring radio's historic support and contributions, will be posted at www.jacobsmedia.com/goingforthegold, and will also be used by the National Association of Broadcasters to remind Congress that labels have long shown their appreciation for radio's help in selling albums and promoting artists.

The idea for "Going for the Gold” originated with Emmis/St. Louis' John Beck, and was initiated by NRG's Chuck DuCoty and Mary Quass. "Chuck DuCoty asked that we lead this all-industry campaign," said Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs. "This week, we're asking all music stations to take 30 minutes to send a message to Congress and musicFIRST about the absurdity of this performance fee/tax issue. It is a contradiction for the music industry to suggest that radio has been cheating artists out of royalties and fees on the one hand, while they have consistently thanked radio for its contributions on the other. NAB is on board, and we’re looking forward to a great response from radio stations everywhere."

Jacobs Media and NAB are asking for participation across the entire industry, and urging radio station personnel to forward details of this initiative to friends and colleagues throughout radio. Gold and platinum award photos should be emailed this week to gold@jacobsmedia.com. The photos will be posted at www.jacobsmedia.com/goingforthegold.
