Radio Stations Unite to Boost Hurricane Ike Recovery Effort

With radio broadcasters traveling to Texas last week for the annual NAB Radio Show in Austin, NAB distributed a special radio public service announcement nationwide urging listeners to make a donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to boost recovery efforts from Hurricane Ike.

NAB President and CEO David K. Rehr sent an email to radio stations across America urging radio broadcasters to unite in a massive public service announcement (PSA) campaign aimed at boosting the recovery efforts.

Specifically, Rehr asked stations to unite in a 'roadblock' effort, designating 1 p.m. EST on Friday, September 19 as a time when radio stations nationwide should consider airing the PSA simultaneously. Rehr also urged stations to voluntarily air the PSA as much as possible.

"We salute the broadcasters in hurricane-affected areas who have risked their personal safety to stay on air throughout the storm and continue serving their communities with vital information," wrote Rehr. "As thousands of radio broadcasters gather in Austin this week for the annual NAB Radio Show, this type of roadblock is a great way to give back and demonstrate the amazing power of radio in disaster relief efforts."

The PSA, emailed to radio stations across America today, is available for download on the NAB's Web site dedicated to public service, NABSpotCenter.com. The PSA will also be made available to attendees of the NAB Radio Show in Austin.
