Last weekend, the National Association of Broadcasters teamed up with the National Black Church Initiative (NBCI) to host a DTV Community Expo to educate consumers about Wilmington's September 8, 2008, transition to digital television.
Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo, representatives from WECT-TV and WILM-TV and local African American pastors, participated in a DTV Community Expo at Union Missionary Baptist Church. Together with Best Buy and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), they helped inform local consumers about the DTV transition test date.
Also taking place last weekend, NAB partnered with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) and their 2008 Congressional interns to coordinate two DTV community events in the Columbia Heights area of Washington D.C., a region boasting a large Hispanic population.
Local broadcasters from Univision, including on-air personality Mario Sol and General Manager Rudy Guernica, worked with CHCI fellows to educate local Hispanic community members on Saturday and Sunday. D.C. Councilman David Catania also attended the weekend's events.
Saturday's event at the Mary's Center included a DTV Exposition and a DTVPal converter box raffle, courtesy of DishLatino. On Sunday, the community event was hosted by Sacred Heart Church in Columbia Heights. DTV converter box coupon applications were made available to attendees, with the broadcasters and students assisting local residents in completing the applications.
