Television Broadcasters Reminded to File Cable Royalty Claims

A reminder to television stations whose signals were carried as distant signals by at least one cable system in 2007: The dates for filing a cable copyright royalty claim with the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) begins July 1, 2008 and will end Tuesday July 31, 2008. If your station fails to file a claim with the CRB within this time frame, it cannot collect any royalties for 2007. The Copyright Act requires a cable system to pay "compulsory license" royalties to carry distant TV signals. The fastest and easiest way for broadcasters to file claims is online through the Copyright Office's Web site. Details on how to file a claim are provided in an NAB Counsel Memo posted on the Resources, Legislative and Regulatory, Counsel Memos section of the NAB Web site, or click here to access the document. For further assistance, contact NAB's legal counsel: John Stewart at (202) 624-2685 or Bart Stringham at (202) 429-5457.
