On February 17 legislation passed Congress that includes voluntary spectrum incentive auction authority and all the protections sought by NAB to ensure that local broadcasters have a vibrant and robust future. This is a major victory for broadcasters and their viewers and we could not have accomplished this without our members' help and grassroots action.
Specifically the legislation that was passed includes:
Many thanks for the hard work of NAB's advocacy team, our radio and TV station members, state association partners and other grassroots activists in executing an aggressive campaign to ensure viewers and local stations are not harmed by a voluntary spectrum incentive auction. By airing ads on broadcast stations, TV viewers and radio listeners also spoke up – more than 130,000 emails and calls flooded Capitol Hill urging viewer protections.
In the end, NAB was successful because broadcasters across the country took action. This legislative victory is an excellent example of how successful we can be when we work together as a unified broadcasting industry.
Rest assured, NAB will continue to work closely with Congress and the FCC to implement an incentive auction program that does not jeopardize broadcasters' critical service for viewers. NAB will encourage strong congressional oversight as the FCC initiates its rulemakings to implement this legislation.
