FIFA World Cup: The Game is in US

Did you know that more than 700 million people tuned in to watch the 2010 World Cup final – 23.4 million of those in the United States?

With ratings in the U.S. for the World Cup drawing record numbers, and popularity at an all-time high, bringing this international event back to the U.S. presents many exciting opportunities for America’s broadcasters.

Not to mention, hosting the World Cup would bring a significant and much needed economic benefit to the U.S. – upwards of $5 billion and the creation of 100,000 jobs.

In December 2010, soccer’s governing body – the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) – will select the countries that will host the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup. The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) is supporting efforts underway to encourage FIFA to select the United States as either the 2018 or 2022 host.

Broadcasters have a unique opportunity to demonstrate the power of our reach by supporting this effort, while advocating for the millions of viewers in the U.S. who love cheering on their favorite team in the quest to win the World Cup.

Your station can help! NAB is working with the USA Bid Committee, Inc. – a nonprofit organization advocating to bring the World Cup to the U.S. – to provide resources for stations that want to participate, including using the materials via the links in the "Resources" box on the right.

These resources encourage viewers to sign a petition that will be delivered to FIFA prior to the decision, encouraging them to bring the World Cup to the U.S. – much to the delight of the millions of soccer fans!

Time is short, so now is the time to participate. Be part of the movement to bring FIFA World Cup to the United States!
