Catholic News Service
Julie Asher

Julie Asher is national editor of Catholic News Service (CNS), an international religion news service based in Washington that serves Catholic publications and other Catholic news outlets around the world. CNS also has a Rome bureau. As national editor, Asher assigns stories to a national reporting team and stringers, edits, coordinates coverage of Catholic news around the U.S., and also is coordinator of CNS interns. She first came to CNS in late 1985. She was a general assignment reporter for several years and then was named national editor. A Denver native, she graduated from Jesuit-run Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. Her first reporting job was at The Star-Herald, a small daily in Scottsbluff, Neb. Next she worked several years at The Denver Catholic Register, newspaper of the Denver Archdiocese, and at the time Colorado’s largest weekly newspaper, and from there came to CNS. She is a longtime member of the Society of Professional Journalists, is a past president of the Washington DC pro SPJ chapter and currently a chapter board member. She also is a longtime member of the Catholic Press Association. This June she received the association’s highest award for Catholic journalism, the St. Francis de Sales Award. (St. Francis de Sales is the patron saint of Catholic journalists.)
