NAB
STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO FCC PLANS
FOR A SECOND ROUND OF UNLICENSED DEVICE TESTING
WASHINGTON,
DC -- NAB Executive Vice President of Media Relations Dennis Wharton released
the following statement today regarding FCC plans to initiate a second
round of unlicensed personal-portable device testing:
"NAB's
paramount objective remains the delivery of interference-free digital
broadcast television to more than 100 million American households. We
are not opposed to new technology; however, given the failing grade performance
and incomplete implementation of the devices submitted in the first round
of tests, we have a high degree of skepticism whether tests of these devices
will demonstrate that a practical service using portable devices can be
introduced without jeopardizing DTV service."
In
July, a
report by the FCC concluded that sample prototype "white space"
devices did not accurately detect broadcast signals and caused interference
to TV broadcasting and wireless microphones.
To
date, 70 lawmakers have expressed concern over the use of unlicensed personal-portable
devices in the broadcast spectrum, including:
