Mel Martinez’s early retirement, the National Republican Senatorial Committee appeared to have scored a major coup when they recruited Gov. Charlie Crist into the Senate race and away from seeking re-election. Though he has significant problems with the dominant conservative wing of his own Republican Party, Crist’s ability to command overwhelming campaign resources will be extremely difficult for any Republican, or Democratic challenger for that matter, to overcome in a state the size of Florida.
